The open source movement gives libraries a license to innovate – no longer confined by proprietary systems with rigid architectures and predetermined formats. Providing a robust yet flexible framework, it frees libraries to expand their horizons and deliver new user experiences.

Our work as the lead developers of FOLIO is a natural extension of over 25 years of open source collaboration with national and academic libraries, consortia, and other library groups with a desire to chart their own course.

Over these years, we have learned what makes for a successful project and where the pitfalls are. While we believe that open source software can play an important role in driving community engagement, innovation, collaboration, and standardization, the only thing we are religious about is delivering the greatest possible value to our customers and partners – whether as open source or a different model.
