Sebastian Hammer and Lynn Bailey will be attending the 2014 Charleston Conference in South Carolina from Nov. 6 - 9. Sebastian will be hosting a Juried Product Development Forum at the Conference on Wednesday, November 5, from 5:00 - 6:15 PM; the topic: Smart Widgets: a new approach to information access in a post-Discovery world.
Between Google and web-scale Discovery solutions, universal search boxes have become a commodity. But end users still suffer from a glut of information, and good information literacy does not automatically follow from universal access. Our Smart Widgets are intended to allow the library to expose access to any combination of sources in any setting or application. The possible applications range from exposing key services or collections in an OPAC or Discovery tool, through illuminating current events or important topic areas in library-curated websites, to embedding access to reference sources within learning environments. The possibilities are just about endless. Sebastian will demonstrate and discuss our current developments in this area, but also share what we see as a new narrative about the role of librarians as facilitators of access to information through the use of technology like this. If you would like to attend, please email.
